Some Common Problems associated with Post Natal Period

  • Post Natal Depression – need to distinguish from baby blue where mother feels little over whelmed, unsure of themselves. Common cause of PND is lack of family support , mother’s experience as a child of feeling neglected, hormonal issues that caused irritable insomnia, feel that you don’t love you baby.
  • Post Partum Haemorrhaging – It may happend within 24 hours of delivery or after 24 hours of delivery.
  • Hydramnios – can be poly/oligo. Major cause is maternal diabetes.
  • Uterine Prolapse

It is better for both the parents to be aware of the health issues concerned before and after birthing and to ensure that both the baby and mother is fine and well.

Postpartum practise of confinement which is much practised in Asian countries has also gained popularity in the western communities who healed and nurtured themselves through natural healing modalities.

While dealing with the challenges of hormonal changes after delivery and the challenge of engorgement with breastfeeding mums, it is much required a nurturance by other family members to give support physically and mentally to the new mother to facilitate them to gain confidence as new parents. Thus the traditional method of confinement -with intake of cooked nourishing meals, supportive help in home ground and assisting the new mum to gain confidence in caring of the newborn does provide the physical and mental support to lessen post natal depression and anxieties.
